Tata Motors may start second round of Nano bookings within 3-6 months

Auto company Tata Motors may reschedule the second round of the Tata Nano’s bookings to an earlier date. According to media reports, the company is likely to re-open bookings for the car in the next three to six months. As announced by the Tatas at the time of the Nano’s launch, its Rs 1 lakh price tag will apply only to the first batch of its customers. All new customers will have to pay a higher price for the car. Apart from increasing demand, a major reason for early round-II bookings is that 20-25 percent of the Nano’s original bookings have been cancelled.
The delivery schedule for the car’s first set of customers has also been preponed from January-March 2011 to September-December 2010. Mr P M Telang, Tata Motors Managing Director, said that commercial production of the Nano at its manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat will begin in the next couple of months. Meanwhile, the company has already ramped up production at its Pantnagar plant from the earlier 150 units a day to 180 units a day.
Tata Motors is expected to launch two diesel variants of the Nano in June this year. The variants will come with a 3-cylinder engine, which may also be used in the Nano Europa.
