The Tata Nano may outsell other small cars in India within a year, with the Maruti 800 and the Maruti Omni all set to be discontinued in 11 major cities, owing to non-compliance of emission norms. The Omni and the 800 will stop being sold from January 2009 in 11 cities, which account for 50 per cent of the country’s total car sales. According to industry analysts, while the Nano may have the potential to leave behind other cars in its segment, it will have to be sold in huge numbers (2.5 lakh plus) to make any money for Tata Motors. With the Sanand plant of the company still not operational, achieving such high numbers may not be possible until the end of 2010.
