General Motors (GM) India is aiming to increase its exports to 20 per cent of its total production by the year 2011. The company’s present production capacity is 2.25 lakh cars. GM India is exporting only to a few neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh currently, and hopes to expand its presence in the Asia Pacific and European markets. Vice President (Corporate Affairs) GM India, P. Balendran, told media persons that the company was planning to export small cars only, and, depending on the demand, would scale up its production capacity at its Talegaon plant in the future.
He also said that the Chevrolet Spark would soon be available in a diesel version, in addition to its current petrol and LPG versions and that the company hoped to increase its market share in India from 4 per cent to 10 per cent, with the launch of the Cruze and a mini car, in the next few months.
