Mercedes-Benz India today announced the launch of 2 new variants of its most popular car in India, the E-Class. The two new models launched are the E 230 and the E 220 CDI.

“The E-Class has sold more than 10,000 units in India since its introduction in 1995. Now the product becomes even more enticing with introduction of the new Bi-Xenon headlamps in the exterior coupled with a 3-way Memory package and electrically adjustable steering wheel, all of which are now standard with the vehicle. The two new engines will further add to the popularity of the E-Class.” commented Dr. Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India.

• E 230: At the heart of the E 230 is its powerful 2.5 liter V6 petrol engine with a 7G-tronic transmission. The vehicle delivers a phenomenal 150 kw/201hp@6100 rpm. It replaces the 4-cylinder, 5-speed transmission predecessor namely the E 200 KOMPRESSOR. The E 230 will be available in the Elegance styling line with features like THERMATRONIC (4-ZONE) air-conditioning, wood leather steering wheel and ambient lighting added on as standard offering (The E 200 KOMPRESSOR was not available in Elegance styling).

• E 220 CDI: The E 220 CDI armed with a 2.2-litre, four cylinder diesel engine that delivers a phenomenal torque of 410 Nm@2000 rpm. With a torque to weight ratio of 192 Nm/ton, the E 220 CDI promises an extra nip in this set of wheels.

The “E-“ for the E-Class initially stood for “Einspritzung” (German for fuel injection); a new feature in volume production vehicles in the 1950’s when the “E” first appeared as a suffix to the engine nomenclature. It was during the launch of the W124 (series nomenclature) that the E- was used as a prefix and the model referred to officially as the E-Class.

The E-Class has been the mainstay of the Mercedes-Benz brand in India. The first car to be locally produced was an E-Class (1995), the 20,000th vehicle to roll off the assembly line at the Mercedes-Benz plant (2008) was also an E-Class. “The reliability and quality of our E-Class has been a key aspect driving the demand for this product in India. It proves the adage- ‘Drive an E-Class and you will drive it forever’” commented Mr. Sanjiv Sahajwala, Director, Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz India.

• E 230 is priced at: Rs. 41.44 lacs, ex-showroom Mumbai.
• E 220 CDI is priced at: Rs. 38.99 lacs, ex-showroom Mumbai.
