Maruti to develop R&D facility independent of Japan's Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), which recently overtook parent company Suzuki Motor in sales, may soon attain self-reliance in some of its research and development initiatives. Suzuki owns a 54.2 percent stake in MSIL, and has so far played a major role in providing engineering expertise to develop the company's products. However, Maruti is now aiming to make its upcoming R&D facility in Rohtak (Haryana) self-reliant, and operate it independently of Suzuki's support by 2012. The company will also introduce its first made-in-India small car around the same time.

Ford India to launch Figo in March 2010

Ford India will launch its much-awaited small car, the Ford Figo, in March 2010. The car's production was flagged off last week at Ford's Maraimalainagar plant near Chennai, by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. Mr Michael Boneham, Ford India President and CEO, said that the car would compete with Hyundai's i10 and Maruti's Swift, but did not say anything about its pricing. The flexible engine plant at the facility will produce both 1.4 litre diesel engines and 1.2 litre petrol engines.

Honda may take upto 3 weeks to replace defective power-window switches

Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) may take upto three weeks to replace faulty power-window switches in the 2007 Honda City, as the component is imported from Thailand. A Honda official said that Honda City owners could continue driving their cars in the meanwhile. The Japanese company had recalled a total of 6.46 lakh cars last week, including 8,532 cars in India. This is the third such recall by Honda in India. The company had recalled 4,459 units of the Honda CR-V in 2007, and 2,200 units of the Accord in 2004.

Car sales continue to rise in January 2010

Auto makers in the country continued to record high car sales in January 2010, on the back of several new model and variant launches and the impending hike in car prices later in the year. Market leader Maruti Suzuki posted a 21 percent sales growth in the month by selling 81,087 units in the domestic market, while Hyundai Motor grew by 40 percent, by selling 29,601 units. American carmaker General Motors saw a whopping 139 percent growth, up from 3,937 units in January 2009, to 9,421 units in January 2010.

Two-wheeler companies post double-digit growth in Jan 2010

Two-wheeler companies in India continued to show a robust growth in sales in January 2010. Hero Honda posted a 23.57 percent increase in sales, up from 315,458 units in January 2009 to 389,802 units in January 2010. TVS Motor Company too reported a 37 percent growth in domestic sales by selling 109,504 units in January 2010, as against 79,729 units in the year-ago period. Bajaj Auto's motorcycle sales went up from 1.09 lakh units to 2.32 lakh units, an increase of 112 percent, in the same period.

Toyota may recall 300,000 units of latest Prius hybrid

Toyota Motor Corporation may recall 270,000 units of the Prius hybrid in Japan and the US, and 30,000 units in other countries, according to reports published in a number of Japanese newspapers this week. The reports came after the Japanese government ordered the auto major to check the brakes in the latest Prius hybrid. The Yomiuri Shimbun reported that Toyota would repair the software programme in the anti-lock braking system (ABS) in all affected vehicles, and that the repair would be carried out free of cost in the US.
