Delhi High Court suggests imposition of 'congestion fee' on private cars
In a bid to regulate traffic on the roads of Delhi, the Delhi High Court has suggested the imposition of a congestion fee on private cars entering certain parts of the city. The HC's directions came in response to a PIL opposing the cap on cycle-rikshaw licenses in Delhi. While reversing the decision to put a cap on rikshaw licences, the court said that road space should not be monopolized by one mode of transport (private cars), given that a major part of the city's population depended on public transport.

Budget 2010 may end stimulus benefits, car prices to go up
The Indian government is expected to roll back part of the benefits that came with the 2008 stimulus package, and increase both service tax and Central Value Added Tax (CENVAT), in the upcoming budget. The extra 4 percent duty cut on big cars may also be discontinued, which would push up big car prices by Rs 12,000 to Rs 100,000. Small car prices may go up by Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000 if service tax and CENVAT are increased.

Tata Motors launches new range of vehicles for municipal use
Tata Motors this week announced the launch of a range of vehicles for civic bodies. The vehicles include hook-loaders, garbage compactors, garbage tippers, knuckle boom cranes, tankers and air conditioned ambulances. So far, the company was supplying only vehicle chassis to civic bodies which would then develop the complete vehicle as per their specific requirements. The company's new vehicles, on the other hand, are fully built and can be used at both village and city levels.

Renault to restructure JV with Mahindra & Mahindra
French auto company Renault this week said that it had no plans to end its joint venture with
Mahindra & Mahindra, but that it would restructure the operations of the JV. Renault India Managing Director, Mr Marc Nassif, told mediapersons that the company would draw up a detailed restructuring plan within the next 30 to 45 days. He added that Renault would roll out five new cars in India in the next few years. The company will also set up its own, independent dealership network in India.

Suzuki may soon launch sports sedan Kizashi in India
Japanese auto company, Suzuki, may soon launch its sports car, the Kizashi, in India. American Suzuki Motor Corp Vice President, Gene Brown, told mediapersons on the sidelines of the Chicago Auto Show that the Kizashi's launch in India was not "that far in the future". However, since he is not in charge of Suzuki's Indian operations, he could not give any further details of the car's launch. The Kizashi, which is Suzuki's first all-wheel-drive sports sedan, was launched in North America in December 2009.

Toyota recalls 436,000 hybrid vehicles including Prius, starts repairs
Toyota Motor Corporation this week announced the recall of around 436,000 of its hybrid vehicles globally, including the latest 2010 Prius model, the Prius PHV (plug-in hybrid), the Sai and the Lexus HS250h. The company has already started repairing the affected Prius models in Japan by rewriting programming for the car's anti-lock braking system. Meanwhile, an official at Toyota's Indian subsidiary - Toyota Kirloskar Motor - said that there was no change in the company's plan to introduce the Prius hybrid in India.
