The Mahindra Thar shares the companies rich DNA of building jeeps. The company first started in the 1940s building CKD Jeeps for the World War. These cars were assembled to take on any kind of terrain. The Thar shares a very similar platform to those rugged Jeeps that spawned from the original. It now comes with a decently powerful engine with a strong retro design.
It is the enthusiast vehicle for the adventure crazy Indian driver. There are is a 4WD and a 2WD drive variant and because it caters to a niche market at such a low price, the Thar faces no real competition.
The Mahindra Thar is a pure retro design of an old retro Jeep. It is short, just under 4 metres,, has a nice ground clearance of 200mm and is also quite high at almost 2 metres. It has got the traditional looks with its front hood and front grille, perfectly round headlights, huge muscular wheel arches that extend along the front section and also over the rear tyres. It is a great looking car that looks capable to take on any kind of terrain. The wheels are also nice and big and look like they can dig deep into the ground. There is no hardtop version of the car and so the rear and top front section are covered by a canopy that does seem to be a problem for city drivers.
The interiors of the Thar are nothing short of poor. The quality of components is very bad and more importantly the steering is completely off-centred. The seats are not the best and they make all kinds of sounds and the dashboard has basically nothing on it but a out of date instrument cluster.
It really is rugged on the inside as well and there is nothing comfortable about it. The rear seats are also not so comfortable as they face each other and don’t provide much stability for the passengers. The Thar is a complete agricultural vehicle on the inside.
The engine used in the Thar is beautiful. It is the same engine found in the Scorpio and it provides great power figures. The 2498cc CRDe diesel engine can produce 105bhp and incredible torque at 247Nm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
The engine on the Thar is fantastic. Because the car is light and small the performance is great. The Thar can really pick up pace and has fantastic torque levels all throughout. Even on the highway the Thar can easily handle moving at 120kmph without a fuss. The steering might be off centre and it is also quite non-responsive but it is not too difficult to handle the car. The gear is comfortable placed, but the pedals are not and the seat cannot be adjusted properly, so the driver doesn’t get the most comfortable drive. However the ride quality is very decent and taking the Thar off-road is very easy thanks to the independent suspension setup. The Thar is very capable to go anywhere and we tested it out on all kinds of terrain. It is a serious off-roader and at the same time it is a good tarmac cruiser.
The Thar is also very fuel efficient and can provide a fuel economy of roughly 14kmpl.
The Thar comes with no new age features. There is only power steering and if can get a factory fitted air conditioner as an option.
There are also no safety features.
Quality of the Thar is exceptionally poor, especially on the inside of the car. However it is built to be tough and is a very reliable machine. It is not meant for comfort, it is meant to be rugged and a serious off-road vehicle. it can be serviced anywhere and its components are inexpensive and cheap, so you don’t need to worry about damaging or replacing parts or components.
The Thar is priced very low and is a very good vehicle. It is made purely for the Indian driving enthusiast and is not a comfort vehicle. You are essentially getting a great vehicle for the money you are paying. There is not another all purpose vehicle in India available at that price.
The Mahindra Thar is a legendary vehicle. It has so much history, but more importantly it performs extremely well. The engine is fantastic, it’s got a great retro design and it is built tough as nails. On the down side the interiors are just really agricultural and poor in quality, but if you are only looking to use the vehicle as a hobby and not for every day driving, it is a fantastic car to have and you will definitely enjoy it.
