The A-Star has been dominating the small hatch segment and is Maruti’s answer to global competitors entering the Indian small car market. The car features great engineering capabilities and provides great performance with an excellent driving experience. The car uses a front wheel drive system and sports a 1.0 litre 3-cylinder engine capable of producing 68bhp and 90Nm of torque which is a fantastic figure considering the price range and size of the car. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and is also available with a 4-speed automatic transmission. It weighs only 860 kg and can comfortably fit 5 people with a decent boot space still vacant. The car has won numerous awards for its ground breaking technology. It looks good and has sporty interiors which market this car directly to the growing youth of the country.

Introduction

The A-Star has come a long way since it was brought to the Indian market. It is actually based on the same platform as the Suzuki Alto. The car was launched in 2008 to take on Hyundai’s best seller, the i10.

Maruti A-Star Exterior View

The A-Star also now comes with an automatic transmission as is the first Indian hatch back from Maruti Suzuki to do so. There are 5 different variants including an ABS version with airbags.

Design & Styling

The A-Star has got a decent look to it as it is curvy and well planted. It’s got long tail lights that stretch back over the front wheel arches, but its front grille is not impressive. The flared wheel arches and medium sized wheels do add some muscle but the car is still small and looks lean. There is also a rear spoiler that adds a sporty charm to the car and the high end variants come with stylish alloy wheels.

Interiors

The interiors now come in a nicely laid out dual tone interior. There is not the most space available in the car, especially the rear seats which can get a little cramped.

Maruti A-Star Interior View

There is a good amount of headroom though. However the dashboard is done up very well and the ergonomics are good.

Engine & Transmission

The engine is once again the K Series engine that has been very well refined. The 998cc 3- cylinder unit in this car can create 68bhp and 90bhp. It is a very good performing engine and it is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that works very well and a 4-speed automatic transmission which seems to work well also.

Performance and Handling

The overall ride quality of the A-Star is very good, and even on the highway at high speeds the car is very stable and well planted. It also goes will around bends and the suspension setup is very good. The car works well in the city also and the steering response is very good and the brakes work well to. The gear changes in the manual are smooth and easy; however in the automatic transmission the gear changes can be a little late or slow. The acceleration is good for a car this size and it handles very well.

Fuel Efficiency

The A-Star is very fuel efficient an you can expect to get a fuel economy of about 13kmpl in the city and 17kmpl on the highway. The automatic variant obviously will give a lesser fuel economy.

Features

The A-Star does have some interesting features also. It comes with power steering, power windows and air conditioning. There is also central locking, an integrated music system and it also comes with seat heights adjuster on the driver’s seat to offer a more comfortable driving position.

Safety

There are also good safety features such as Airbags, ABS with EBD, rear defogger and Automatic shift lock.

Quality & Reliability

In terms of overall quality of the car the A-Star is very good. The interiors are comfortable and have good quality plastics and materials and the exterior panels on the body are also good. The A Star is quite reliable and so far no major problems have been found in the car.

Value for Money

The A-Star is one of the best cars in its segment and it comes with very good quality materials so it probably has the best value for money in its class.

Verdict

The A-star is a very good performer and it comes with very good build quality and a decent design on the exterior body. The only problem is the rear passenger space and small boot size, other than that there is no negative. The car is also priced very well and the automatic transmission is very helpful for crowded city driving.
