The SX4 is Maruti Suzuki’s mid-sized sedan for the Indian market. The car was first originally developed in collaboration between Suzuki and Fiat, and in some European markets it is marketed as the Fiat Sedici.
The SX4 was launched in India in 2007 to take on the growing mid-sized sedan segment and it had minor cosmetic changes compared to European markets. Currently the SX4 is available with petrol and Diesel engines and now feature VVT technology in the petrol engine. There is also a CNG version of the car available.
The SX4 is a very stylish car with a great design. The SX4 has only been refreshed just recently and it does have some strong characteristics. The long headlights and large front grille with chrome and fog lights on the dual coloured front bumper looks really good. The sloping front hood and the sweeping rear give the car an imposing presence, and it’s get decent size tyres with alloys to give it a more premium feel. There is also now a side skirt along the car to make it a little sportier. The car looks like a European sedan and it looks like a premium sedan.
The Interiors are very welcoming and there is plenty of leg room and lots of headroom. The materials are of good quality like the upholstery on the seats and the dashboard is designed very well and the ergonomics are good. It’s got an attractive instrument cluster as well as a nice steering wheel.
For the new SX4 the interiors also get a new black and beige dashboard, wood finish arm rests, chrome finishing on the AC ducts and a fully integrated touchscreen stereo with navigation. It certainly is a luxurious feel on the inside.
There are two engine variants as well as a CNG variant. The petrol engine features the 1586cc 4-cylinder engine that now gives an output of 103bhp and 145Nm of torque. The Diesel engine uses the 1.3 litre Fiat Multijet engine with 90bhp and increased torque of 200Nm. All the engines have been reengineered to perform better and be more efficient. All the engine variants are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission does works very well.
The SX4 might be a mid-sized sedan but it does perform well above its segment. The car seems to run very well and can travel at high speeds without any vibrations or qualms when on the highway. The steering is very good but seems a little light, the clutch is very good and the gear changes are smooth and easy. There is almost no body-roll at all and the suspension setup had been done up perfectly. Even if you go over potholes the car doesn’t bump around much. The brakes also work very well even though it uses drum brakes in the rear. The petrol engine is seamless, and the new diesel engine with VGT technology provides plenty of torque for good acceleration.
The VVT petrol engine can provide a fuel economy of around 14kmpl, which is good for a mid-sized sedan. The diesel variant gives around 19kmpl and the CNG goes even further by providing around 22km/kg.
The new refreshed SX4 comes with some very exciting features. Other than power steering, power windows and electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors, it has also got an integrated touchscreen stereo with navigation and Bluetooth, as well as 4 speakers with 2 tweeters and steering mounted controls. These are great features for a mid-sized sedan.
The SX4 also has safety features like dual front airbags and ABS with EBD.
The overall quality of the car is brilliant. The design is great and uses strong panels and the exterior finishing is good. The interiors are also very plush and of good quality. The SX4 can also be a quite reliable car, but it’s not built to be tough. Once again you get Maruti backing with service and components available with no problem.
The value of the SX4 is quite good. The quality is great, the design is beautiful and the interiors are very comfortable and premium. You get great features as well as safety and it is the best performer in its segment.
The SX4 has been refreshed to take on the competition. Nissan Sunny, Renault Scala and the VW Vento are its closest competitors. The SX4 does not have the same amount of rear seat space, but the engine is flawless and the transmission is fantastic. It certainly is the better performer and gives a great fuel economy. Plus it’s got Maruti dealer network backing.
