The Wagon R was one of the first hatch-back vehicles in India that gave you acres of space. its overall exterior design has been altered very little to keep its USP of space and comfort on top of the list. While the design is not the most attractive, the practicality and comfort the car offers at its price range is something that no other competitor can compete with.
The Wagon R now comes with more features and of course a better engine in the form of the K Series. There are three trim levels and there is also a CNG version available.
While the Wagon R is not the most appealing in terms of its design, the exterior remains highly practical. There is however a newly designed front bumper that looks decent, and the front grille also gets elements of chrome to make it look more appealing, and there are also sporty fog lamps on the bumper as well. She same boxy shape has stayed on along with the straight and bland lines at the rear and mid section.
The Interiors have got a refreshing change but the same levels of comfort and space are not compromised. The Wagon R has the most headroom and leg room in its segment and that is something that really makes this car special.
There is also ample space in the boot and now there are new storage compartments. The dashboard has gotten a little update as the Wagon R now comes with an integrated audio system and there is also a dual tone interior colour scheme.
The K Series engine once again makes its way into the Wagon R. it is the same engine found in most other Maruti cars and is called the K10B. The engine has a capacity of 998cc and can give a power output of 68bhp and 90Nm of torque. This figures are decent enough for a car of its size, but it’s not something that will thrill the driver. It is very efficient and well refined so it performs smoothly. The engine is also mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that works well. There is also a Green variant of the engine available that produces a power output of 59bhp and 77Nm of torque. this engine is the same capacity but has been tuned down to allow for a much better fuel economy and lesser carbon emissions. There is also the option of installing a factory fitted CNG kit.
The overall performance of the Wagon R is at par with other hatches in its segment. It doesn’t have the most power but it does provide a comfortable and decent ride quality. The acceleration is not the best and another flaw in the design which compromises on performance is the height of the car. Because it is very tall, it loses it centre of gravity and you need to be careful when turning sharp corners at very high speeds. There is also lots of body roll on curves. Other than that, the comfort levels in the car are very good. The suspension works well and so do the brakes.
The Wagon R is decently efficient in terms of its fuel economy. You can manage to get 12kmpl in the city. IN the Green engine variant you can manage almost 15kmpl. With the CNG variant you will get a much better fuel economy.
The car also has some good features such as power steering, power windows, air conditioning, and keyless entry. There is also an integrated music system and USB.
The Wagon R also comes with a few but necessary safety features such as Driver SRS airbag, ABS, front and rear fog lamps.
The overall quality of materials is quite decent in the Wagon R and a step above the smaller hatches from Maruti Suzuki. The exterior quality of panels is quite good, as are the interior materials. The finishing touches are also quite decent as is the comfort level. The cabin seems quite enough and the engine is very smooth. Overall the quality is pretty decent. The Wagon R is also very reliable and can handle tough conditions and still performs well. There is no shortage of authorized service cetres and finding parts is not a problem.
With a starting price just under Rs 4 lakh it’s quite a bargain. The quality is decent and the engine well refined so the car does have good value for money.
In its segment the Wagon R does have the most space, and is a good performer but it’s not an exciting one. You could get a better performing hatch but you will definitely not enjoy the same comfort levels.
