Skoda plans product realignment in India; will launch the Yeti in 2010
Czech car company Skoda, a subsidiary of the
Volkswagen (VW) group, will be realigning its products in India to reduce competition with similarly priced VW cars. The
Skoda Superb and the Skoda Laura are already available at relatively lower prices than before. The company will also change the positioning of the new Octavia, to be launched after 2 years. The new version of the car will be placed in the Rs 6-10 lakh bracket. It is currently priced at Rs 10-12 lakh. Meanwhile, Skoda India will launch its ‘compact SUV’, the Yeti, in the second half of 2010. The vehicle will be launched with a 2.0 litre diesel engine, and a petrol version will follow later. It will be brought to India as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) unit, and will be assembled at Skoda's manufacturing plant in Aurangabad.

Mercedes-Benz India launches new E-Class
Mercedes-Benz India launched a new version of its luxury sedan, the Mercedes E-Class, this week. Priced at Rs 46.98 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the new E-Class comes with a 3.5 litre V-6 petrol engine. A diesel variant of the car will follow later. The Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, Mr. Wilfried Aulbur, told media persons that the company expected its current year's sales to be lower than last year's, but that the situation would improve in 2010.

Ford India unveils the Figo in New Delhi
Ford India finally unveiled its much-awaited small car in New Delhi this week. The car, known as the ‘Figo’ (meaning ‘cool’ in Italian), will be launched with both petrol and diesel engine options, in 2010. Developed especially for the Indian market, the Figo has been built on a brand new platform. It will contain up to 85 per cent localised content, and is expected to be priced under Rs 4 lakh.

Renault to use Nissan's small car platform for its new car
French auto company Renault SA will be using its partner Nissan's small car platform to develop its own compact car in India. Renault has suffered major losses in the past year, and a readymade platform will help it cut down on the development costs of its new car. Both Renault's and Nissan's small cars will roll out of the companies' under-construction manufacturing plant in Chennai. They may even share the same engine, with changes in the power output.

Tata Motors launches Freelander 2; will introduce new versions of 3 JLR models by November 2009
Tata Motors launched Land Rover's
Freelander 2 in India this week. The Freelander, available in three variants - S, SE and HSE, is priced between Rs 33.80 lakh and Rs 45 lakh. Mr. Rohit Suri, the head of Tata Motors' premium car division, said that the company would also launch new versions of the other three Land Rover models currently available in India, in November 2009. These are the Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport and the Discovery 4 (the advanced version of the Discovery 3). In addition, diesel versions of the Jaguar XFR and the Jaguar XF will be launched sometime next year.

Mahindra Renault launches two new variants of Logan; targets sales figure of 1,200 units
Mahindra Renault this week launched a new sports version of its entry-level sedan, the Mahindra Logan. Known as the ‘Logan Play’, the new version if the car is available in a1.4 GLX petrol variant, and a 1.5 DX diesel variant, priced at Rs 5.42 lakh and Rs 6.72 lakh respectively. The company aims to sell at least 1,200 units of the Logan in northern India in FY 2009-10, up from the1,150 units sold last fiscal.
