Mercedes M-Class gets 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP

The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has awarded a 5-star safety rating to the Mercedes-Benz M-Class. The M-Class comes with six airbags, belt tighteners, belt force limiters and crash-responsive NECK-PRO headrests. In addition, it is equipped with the PRE-SAFE passenger protection system, which can automatically deploy preventive measures before an accident occurs, after assessing the driver's braking and steering behaviour.

BMW Z4 to be launched in India on October 12, 2009

BMW India will launch its new convertible, the Z4, in Mumbai on October 12, 2009. The German company currently sells two convertible car models in India - the BMW M3 and the BMW M6. The Z4 is expected to be priced at Rs 50-60 lakh. It has a top speed a 250 km/hr and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hr in 5.8 seconds. BMW hopes to sell at least 30-40 units of the car in the first year of its launch.

Nissan reveals sketch of global small car

Japanese auto company Nissan has unveiled a sketch of the global small car it is developing to replace the Nissan Micra/March in 2010. The car, to be built on a global platform, will be available in three versions - hatchback, sedan and MPV. It will be sold in as many as 150 countries, and will be manufactured in five countries. In India, the car will be built at Nissan and Renault's Oragadam plant near Chennai. It will make its debut in Thailand in March 2010, where it will be marketed as the country's first 'eco-car'.

Auto sales surge in September 2009

Auto sales in India continued to rise in September 2009, on the back of low interest rates on auto loans, the revival of the economy and the beginning of the festival season. Maruti Suzuki, the biggest passenger car company in India, sold a total of 71,594 units in the domestic market in September 2009, up from 64,682 units in September 2008 - a growth of 10.7 per cent. Hyundai Motor's domestic sales grew by 24.6 per cent in the same period. The company sold 27,803 units in September 2009, as against 22,311 units in September 2008. General Motors India sold 7,654 units in September 2009, up from 5,154 units in September 2008. The most extraordinary growth in sales was reported by Fiat India, which sold only 243 cars in September 2008 and 2,567 in September 2009.

Porsche Panamera launched in India

Luxury car maker Porsche launched the Panamera in India last week. The four-door, four-seater sports car is available in three variants - S, 4S and Turbo, and is priced between Rs 1.44 crore and Rs 2.05 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Managing Director of Precision Cars India, Mr Rod Wallace, said at the car's launch event that Porsche would soon expand its dealer network in the country to 6 cities. It currently has dealerships in Delhi and Mumbai, and is now planning to enter Kochi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ludhiana, Ahmedabad and Bangalore.
