Fiat-Tata JV to bring Chrysler vehicles to India
The joint venture between Fiat India and Tata Motors, Fiat India Automobiles Limited (FIAL) may soon launch a number of Chrysler models in India. The first of these is likely to be the iconic Jeep Cherokee, which will be followed by other vehicles. Fiat had acquired a 20 per cent stake in Chrysler earlier this year, after the latter filed for bankruptcy. Apart from the Cherokee, other well-known Chrysler products are the Avenger, the Caliber, the Challenger and the Viper.

Tata Motors, Voith may enter JV to manufacture diesel engines
Germany-based company, Voith, which manufactures paper machines, hydropower equipment and diesel locomotives, may enter a joint venture with the Tata Group to make diesel engines for its locomotives. Talks between the two companies also include a proposition to jointly manufacture hydrodynamic retarders, which are used to slow down high-speed vehicles. Tata Motors currently has a JV with US-based Cummins Engine Company to make diesel engines at Jamshedpur.

25,000 cars sold on Dhanteras
Car sales in India touched 25,000 units on the occasion of Dhanteras last week. While market leader Maruti Suzuki sold 8,000 cars in a single day, Honda Siel Cars India too recorded a high sales figure of 1,200 units. General Motors India sold 2,000 cars on the occasion. Maruti Suzuki's executive officer, Mr Mayank Pareek, said that though sales had picked up during the festival season, it would be premature to say that the auto industry had come out of the economic slowdown.

Shanghai Auto may enter alliance with GM India
China's largest carmaker, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), may soon buy a stake in General Motors (GM) India. The joint venture will involve sourcing of components from China, and assembling Shanghai Auto's light trucks at GM's Talegaon plant in India. The alliance will help GM India expand its portfolio in the country by entering the profitable light trucks segment. The company currently sells only passenger cars in India.

Fiat to launch new versions of Palio, Linea
Fiat India will soon be launching a new version of its oldest existing hatchback in the country, the Fiat Palio. The 1.1 litre and 1.6 litre petrol engines of the car will either be upgraded to meet Bharat Stage IV emission norms, or be replaced by the engines that power the Grande Punto. The new Palio may also get a new grille and a redesigned dashboard. Fiat is also planning to showcase a
more powerful version of the Linea at the 2010 Auto Expo. The Linea is currently powered by 1.3 litre diesel and 1.4 litre petrol engines. Its new version is expected to feature a more powerful diesel engine, which will help it further consolidate its position in the C segment.
