Premier Automobiles to launch compact SUV
Vehicle manufacturer Premier Automobiles, which once dominated the Indian car market, will soon be making a comeback with a compact SUV - the RiO. Premier is expected to launch the RiO along with its Chinese partner, Zoyte Auto, within this week. The vehicle will be brought to India in Completely Knocked-Down (CKD) form, and will be assembled at the company's Chinchwad plant near Pune. Expected to be priced between Rs 5.5 lakh and Rs 8 lakh, the Rio will be 30 per cent cheaper than the Tata Safari. Deliveries will start in December 2009.

Maruti Alto, Wagon R to get new engines
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) will soon equip the
WagonR and the Alto with Bharat Stage-IV compliant K-series engines. The two cars are currently powered by F-series engines, which are not BS-IV compliant. The Bharat Stage IV emission norms will be effective in eleven cities in India starting from April 2010. MSIL's more recent models like the A-Star and the Ritz already come with K-series engines. The company has already upgraded the SX4 to meet BS-IV norms, and is planning to do the same with the Swift and the DZire.

Audi India to assemble more models locally, targets 50 per cent growth in sales
Audi India is looking to achieve a 50 per cent growth in sales in both 2009 and 2010. The company sold 1,050 cars in India 2008, and is aiming to sell 1,600 units in 2009. As part of its growth strategy, Audi India will be launching a new model next year. It will also introduce an advanced version of an existing model. The company plans to start assembling more models in India to gain a competitive edge in the market. Mr Martin Birkner, the head of Audi India (Marketing), told media persons that the company would start assembling at least one or two more models in India by 2010.

Toyota Motor in no hurry to enter small-car segment
Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) is in no hurry to enter the small-car segment in India. The company's small car will be launched in 2011, which it admits is a little late compared to competitors. However, Toyota is not worried. Mr Yukitoshi Funo, TMC's Executive Vice-President, said that the company would continue to follow its traditional approach in India, and move step-by-step to cover all passenger car segments. Its small car is expected to be priced higher than same-segment products manufactured by Hyundai and Suzuki, and will be displayed at the Auto Expo in January 2010.

Ford Canada to shut down a plant for a week due to Rico labour strike
Ford Motor Company has decided to shut down an assembly plant at Oakville, Ontario due to a shortage in component supplies from Rico Auto Industries. The Oakville plant will remain closed from October 26 to October 30, 2009. Gurgaon based Rico Auto has been facing labour unrest since September 21, 2009, when 16 of the company's employees were suspended for indiscipline. Rico's other customers include General Motors and Jaguar Land Rover. Both companies said that they had not been affected by the labour strike.
