Premier Auto launches RiO

Automaker Premier Limited launched a compact Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), the RiO, this week. Placed between mid-sized passenger cars and larger utility vehicles, the RiO is priced at Rs 5.25 to Rs 5.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune). Chairman and Managing Director of Premier Ltd, Mr Maitreya Doshi, said at the vehicle's launch ceremony that it was targeted at fun-loving, small families looking for multi-utility vehicles. It will be assembled at Premier's Pune plant.

Fiat may enter LCV segment in India

Italian automaker Fiat is considering the option of manufacturing light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in India. The Fiat Group's Chief Operating Officer, Mr Silvirio Bonfiglioli, told media-persons that the company had sufficient capacity in India to build light commercial vehicles, and that there was a possibility that it would enter this segment. Mr Bonfiglioli was speaking on the sidelines of the inaugural ceremony of 'Fiat Diesel Drives India', a drive organized by the company to promote its diesel vehicles in India.

New Maruti SX4 launched

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has launched a new, BS-IV compliant version of the SX4, priced between Rs 6.68 lakh and Rs 8.36 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The car comes with a 1.6 litre engine powered by advanced Variable Valve Timing (VVT) technology, and delivers a maximum power of 104.68 PS @ 5600 rpm. Entertainment features include steering-mounted audio controls, which are illuminated for ease-of-use in the dark, as well as USB connectivity on the dashboard.

Hyundai files case against Mahindra Renault in Delhi High Court

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has filed a case against Mahindra Renault in the Delhi High Court, accusing the latter of using the name 'Sandero' for a compact car it is planning to launch, which sounds very similar to Hyundai's own well-established Santro. The Korean company says that Mahindra Renault is trying to cash in on the popularity of the Santro by using a similar sounding name for a product in the same segment. Meanwhile, Mahindra Renault has issued a press release saying that it does not own the Sandero brand, and has no locus standi on it. The brand belongs to Renault.

Maruti still way ahead of competitors in customer satisfaction: JD Power survey

According to the 'JD Power Asia Pacific 2009 India Customer Service Index (CSI) Study', Maruti Suzuki continues to top the list of Indian auto companies in customer service, even in the face of increasing competition. This is for the tenth consecutive year that Maruti has topped the list, with a score of 824 on 1000. Honda Siel Cars India comes second with 791 points, and Mahindra & Mahindra is third with 757 points. The Study used five main factors to determine the result - service quality, vehicle pickup, service advisor, service facility and service initiation.

M&M launches compact truck Gio

Automaker Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) this week launched a new compact truck, the Mahindra Gio. The Gio, priced between Rs 1.65 lakh and Rs 1.68 lakh, is India's first four-wheel, half-a-tonne compact truck. It is powered by a 9.1 hp engine, and boasts of a fuel efficiency of 27 km/litre. The vehicle is manufactured at M&M's Haridwar plant, where the company also makes its three-wheelers. Mr Pawan Goenka, the President of M&M's automotive sector, told media-persons that the Gio was developed at a cost of only Rs 25 crore, as the company could draw from the available 'engineering and tooling basket'.
