January 2010 Auto Expo fully booked

In marked contrast to last month's Tokyo Motor Show, the Delhi Auto Expo to be held in January 2010 is attracting automakers from all over the world. Media reports say that though there are still two months left for the Expo, the venue - Pragati Maidan - is already fully booked. The Auto Expo will begin on January 5, and will go on for a week. International auto companies that will be present at the show include Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Renault, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Toyota and Honda.

Tata Motors launches 2010 Range Rover in Mumbai

Tata Motors launched the 'Range Rover Model Year 2010' from the Land Rover stable this week. The SUV is available at a starting price of Rs 98.5 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) and comes in both diesel and petrol variants. Tata Motors said in a statement that the 2010 Range Rover has been upgraded to deliver a more power-packed performance and greater comfort to passengers. It comes with a new engine, revolutionary interior technologies and enhanced driving dynamics, and is being called Land Rover's most complete luxury 4X4.

Honda Siel launches new version of CR-V

Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) launched a new version of its SUV, the Honda CR-V, this week. The new CR-V is priced between Rs 21.9 lakh and Rs 24.12 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), and comes in three variants with engine capacities ranging from 2.0-2.4 litres. It is 45mm longer than its previous version, and sports a redesigned bumper, a new front grille and alloy wheels. It also features six airbags, a cruise control system and a new music system with USB connectivity.

Auto sales continue to rise in October 2009

Festival discounts and new car launches continued to provide an upward thrust to auto sales in October 2009. Market leader Maruti Suzuki saw a 21 per cent increase in domestic sales, and a whopping 158.5 per cent increase in exports. The company sold a total of 71,551 units in India in October 2009, compared to 59,127 units in October 2008. Hyundai Motor's domestic sales grew by 41.4 per cent, up from 20,009 units in October 2008 to 28,301 units in October 2009. Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) recorded a phenomenal 346.9 per cent growth, selling 6,909 units in October 2009, as against 1,546 units in October 2008.

Bajaj Auto sets sales target of 1 million units for Pulsar, Discover

Two-wheeler company Bajaj Auto is targeting annual sales of 1 million units for both the Pulsar and the Discover in FY 2010-11. Bajaj Auto CEO (two-wheelers), Mr S Sridhar, told media persons that demand for the Discover had already reached 100,000 units a month and that the company was facing production constraints. He said Bajaj Auto would ramp up production at its plants in Waluj, Chakan, and Pantnagar to meet rising demand.

M&M may introduce passenger variant of Gio

Less than a week after the launch of the Gio, Mahindra & Mahindra is already considering introducing a passenger variant of the vehicle. The 0.5 tonne truck is priced at Rs 1.65 lakh, and creates a new segment between three-wheelers and light trucks. M&M now wants to bring out new variants based on the Gio's platform, including a passenger carrier. While the Gio, in its present avatar, is meant for intra-city transportation, its passenger variant will be used for both intra and inter-city travel.

Hyundai India head HS Lheem to be transferred

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) CEO and Managing Director, HS Lheem, will be transferred to the company's headquarters in Seoul this week. He will be succeeded by Senior Executive Director of HMIL, HW Park. Lheem joined HMIL in 2005, and has been responsible for many of the company's achievements. Significant among these was to make the company a major global player, commissioning its second manufacturing plant in Sriperumbudur and overseeing the launches of the i10, the i20 and the Verna. Hyundai's Kappa engine facility too was set up in India during Lheem's tenure.

BMW net profit falls by 74 per cent in Q3, 2009

German luxury car company BMW reported a 73.8 per cent fall in its net profit in the third quarter of 2009, compared to the corresponding period last year. The situation is expected to get better in last quarter of 2009. According to BMW's forecast, total sales this year will be 10-15 per cent lower than sales in 2008. In spite of the BMW Group's dismal performance overall, it is doing well in India and also China - its biggest Asian market.

Ford Motor posts $997 million net profit in Q3, 2009

Ford Motor Company posted a positive cash flow of $1.3 billion in the third quarter of 2009, leading the company's shares to shoot up. Its net profit in the given period was $997 million. The July-September 2009 period has been Ford's first positive quarter since the second quarter of 2007. In the first half of 2009, the company burned through $4.7 billion of cash. Following its surprising financial results in the third quarter, Ford has raised its outlook for 2011 from 'break-even' to 'solidly profitable'.
