Volkswagen India to launch Beetle in December 2009

European auto major Volkswagen will be launching its iconic car, the Beetle, in India in December 2009. It will be imported from Volkswagen's Mexican plant. First launched in Germany in 1938, the Beetle went on to become the world's most-produced car of a single design. Other VW cars available in India are the Jetta, the Passat and the Touareg. The company will launch its small car, the Polo, in early 2010.

Toyota Kirloskar to expand Technical Education Programme

Auto company Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has decided to increase the number of its collaborations with Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) from 16 to 40 by 2012, under its Technical Education Programme. The Toyota Technical Education Programme (TTEP) was started to help ITIs train technicians for the automotive repair industry. The company feels that the manpower in India's auto repair industry is inadequately skilled, due to a lack of professional training.

Nissan committed to developing small car with Bajaj, says Ghosn

Renault-Nissan head Carlos Ghosn said last week that Nissan was committed to developing a low-cost, small car with Bajaj Auto by 2011, in spite of differences between the companies. Speaking on the sidelines of the India Economic Summit, Ghosn said that the affordability of the car was important not only for India but for emerging markets all over the world. He could not, however, say with certainty whether the $2,500 price tag would be strictly adhered to.

M&M to restructure top-level management

Mahindra & Mahindra has decided to reorganise its top-level management to bring its automobile and farm equipment businesses closer. Mr Anjani Kumar Chaudhuri, the head of M&M's farm equipment department, is due to retire in early 2010. After his retirement, the company's auto and tractor businesses will both be headed by Mr Pawan Goenka, who currently heads the auto division.

Dilip Chhabria to re-design 200 Nanos

Celebrated automobile designer, Dilip Chhabria, has tied up with Jagdish Khattar's Carnation Auto to redesign the exteriors of 200 Tata Nanos. The first 'Hot Nano', as Chhabria calls the redesigned version of the car, will be out in the market by December 2009. He said that there was a waiting period for the car, as a number of people wanted their Nanos redone. Each 'Hot Nano' will cost approximately Rs 80,000 more than the original version. Changes in the interiors of the car will be minimal.

Workers end strike at Rico Auto

The labour strike at Rico Auto Industries ended last week after an agreement was reached between agitating workers and the management. Rico Auto Senior Vice-President, Mr Surinder Singh Chaudhury, said that the company would take back 8 out of the 16 workers who were suspended after the strike began on September 17. He also said that action would be taken against seven workers who indulged in indiscipline, following an investigation. Decisions regarding salary hike and incentives will be taken after comparing these with salaries at other major firms in the Gurgaon-Manesar belt.

GM takes a U-turn, decides to keep Opel

The head of General Motors' European Operations, Carl-Peter Forster, quit last week after the company announced that it would keep its European unit, Opel, instead of selling it. After months of negotiations with Canada-based Magna International, GM finally announced that it would restructure Opel on its own instead of selling it to Magna. The announcement led to widespread protests in Germany, where it was felt that a take-over by Magna was the best course forward for Opel, and that the move would help save jobs.

Forster may take over as JLR head

The head of GM's European operations, Carl-Peter Forster, who quit last week after GM decided not to sell Opel to Magna International, may soon take charge of Tata Motors-owned Jaguar-Land Rover (JLR). According to media reports, Forster was given the offer earlier this year and is likely to take over JLR's British operations within the next few months.
