Passenger car companies post double-digit sales growth in November 2009
Passenger car sales in India rose significantly in November 2009, on the back of a low-base effect and festival discounts. Maruti Suzuki posted a 61.6 per cent growth in domestic passenger car sales, up from 47,103 units in November 2008,
to 76,106 units in November 2009. Hyundai India's domestic sales
too rose from 14,605 units in November 2008 to 28,162 units in November 2009 - an increase of 92.8 per cent. Tata Motors' sales in the domestic market went up from 14,327 units to 20,706 units in the same period.

M&M to introduce low-cost tractor for small farmers
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is planning to launch a new low-cost tractor in India for small farmers. Expected to be priced at approximately Rs 150,000, the tractor will be introduced in 2011. Mr Anjanikumar Choudhuri, president of M&M's farm equipment business, said that the company hoped to sell 25,000 units of the vehicle annually, within four years. The 15-horsepower tractor will be 40 per cent cheaper than the 25-horsepower tractors available in the market right now. It is targeted at small farmers who do not own tractors at present due to financial constraints.

VIP car registration numbers may soon be on sale in Delhi
The transport department of Delhi may soon have a system in place to sell 'VIP' car registration numbers to the common man. Allotment of VIP numbers to private car owners was discontinued three years back, when Chholegate-scam accused Ashok Malhotra was found to own a fleet of cars with VIP numbers. At present, only ministers, MPs, MLAs and bureaucrats are allowed to use VIP numbers. This, however, may soon change with the transport department considering putting a fixed price on different categories of numbers. Transport department officials say that most queries they receive come from those seeking VIP numbers for their cars, and that selling such numbers would be a good money spinner for them.

Toyota to showcase new compact car in January 2010
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Deputy MD, Mr Sandeep Singh, said this week that the company would showcase its upcoming compact car at the January 2010 Delhi Auto Expo. He said that Toyota would display both the sedan and hatchback versions of the concept vehicle next month. The car's production will begin at the company's new plant in Bangalore in December 2010. Mr Singh said that TKM would produce 70,000 units of the car in the first year of its launch. It will also showcase its hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, at the Auto Expo.

Maruti to launch new MPV to replace Versa in Jan 2010
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) will
launch a new multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in January 2010, to replace the Versa. The new van will be priced at Rs 4 lakh, and will come in multiple variants. It will be powered by a new BS IV compliant engine. Meanwhile, the Maruti A-Star recently reached a milestone by selling 100,000 units in overseas markets in less than a year. The car, launched in November 2008, is Maruti's flagship export model.

Two-wheeler sales soar in November; Bajaj motorcycle sales up 84 per cent
Two-wheeler manufacturers in India posted an impressive sales growth in November 2009, helped by low interest rates on bank loans and new launches. Hero Honda sold 381,378 units in November 2009, as against 289,426 units in November 2008 - an increase of 32 per cent. TVS Motor too grew by 38 per cent, selling 106,836 units in November 2009, compared to 77,491 units in November 2008. Bajaj Auto sold 242,390 motorcycles in November 2009 - 84 per cent higher than its sales in November 2008. The company's total two-wheeler sales in the month stood at 242,648 units.

General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson resigns
The Chief Executive Officer of General Motors, Mr Fritz Henderson, resigned from his post this week, just eight months after assuming office. Henderson's resignation came as a response to the company board's decision that GM needed faster restructuring and a change in leadership. He was asked to leave at a meeting held in Detroit recently. The company's Chairman, Ed Whitacre, will act as interim CEO until a replacement is found for Henderson.
