Suzuki Motorcycles to double production capacity by March 2010
Two-wheeler company Suzuki Motorcycles India Limited (SMIL) is planning to double the production capacity at its Gurgaon facility by March 2010. The plant's current capacity is 1.7 lakh units a year, which will be increased to 2.5 lakh units by January and 3 lakh units by March 2010. The company's expansion plan comes in light of the huge demand for its scooter, the Suzuki Access 125, which has a waiting period of 3 months. Suzuki produces 11,000 units of the scooter in a month, while its demand is 38,000 units.

Tata Nano to be displayed at New York's Cooper-Hewitt Museum
The world's cheapest car, Tata Nano, will soon be displayed at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York. A yellow coloured model of the Nano will be showcased at the museum from February 18, 2010 to April 25, 2010, along with diagrams and a short film explaining its concept. The Curatorial Director of Cooper-Hewitt, Cara McCarty, said that the people's car would be displayed at the museum in keeping with its mission to showcase the world's latest developments in design and technology.

Shell India, CII launch initiative to reduce road accidents
The Institute of Quality at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Shell India signed a joint pact last week to make Indian roads safer. The new initiative, called 'Safe Fleets', will promote the adoption of a voluntary code of conduct for road safety. It aims at developing a culture of road safety in the country by formulating and promoting road transportation and safety management standards. Three companies in the country have already implemented the voluntary code of conduct, and 15 more are expected to follow shortly.

Carnation Auto ties up with Fiat's Magneti Marelli to service premium cars
Indian car service provider Carnation Auto tied up with the Fiat Group's Magneti Marelli last week, to service premium cars. Carnation Auto Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Jagdish Khattar, told mediapersons that the company had so far dealt with only entry-level cars, and that with this new venture, it would also start servicing premium cars priced at above Rs 10 lakh. The two companies will start a pilot programme in Gurgaon in the initial phase of the project, and will later expand it to cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru depending on customers' response.

Spyker prepares fresh offer to take over Saab
Dutch automaker Spyker Cars has submitted a fresh offer to take over General Motors' car brand Saab, even as GM prepares to shut down the company. Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller said that the company had made all possible efforts to resolve the issues that had earlier prevented the conclusion of the matter, and that he hoped GM would seriously consider the new offer. Hyundai to enter 50:50 JV with Chinese truck maker Batotou Bei
South Korean carmaker Hyundai is planning to enter a 50:50 joint venture with China's Batotou Ben Bei Heavy-duty Truck Co., to tap the East Asian country's rapidly growing auto market. The $400 million venture will manufacture heavy trucks, and is aiming to sell 100,000 units, annually, by 2014. A Korean auto industry analyst said that the new JV is a good move by Hyundai, as other global auto companies are not yet targeting China's huge commercial vehicle market, which accounted for 29 per cent of the world's CV sales in 2008.
