Maruti to discontinue sale of Maruti 800 in 13 cities from April 2010
India's biggest passenger-car maker, Maruti Suzuki,
will be discontinuing the Maruti 800 in 13 cities from April 2010, Mr RC Bhargava said this week. The carmaker has decided not to upgrade the small car to comply with Bharat Stage IV norms, and will stop selling it in the 13 cities where the norms will be implemented from April 1, 2010. The car will continue to be sold in the remaining parts of the country, which will switch to Bharat Stage III norms.

Honda Siel to start second plant in India in Rajasthan
Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI) will soon be starting work on its second plant in the country, in Rajasthan. The company had earlier put its plan to start production at the Rajasthan plant on hold, due to declining demand. The plant will have an annual production capacity of 60,000 units and will see an investment of $215 million. Production at the unit will begin after HSCI utilizes the full 100,000-unit capacity at its first plant near Delhi.

Tata Motors reports 93 percent increase in global sales in Jan 2010
Tata Motors
sold a total of 85,714 units worldwide in January 2010, almost double its sales in the same month last year.
The figure includes Jaguar and Land Rover sales, which stood at 16,269 units in the month. Meanwhile, the company developed a range of commercial vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells recently. The vehicles were developed at Tata's European Technical Centre, and are currently undergoing trial runs. Hydrogen fuel cells are among the most eco-friendly alternative fuel technologies, as they emit only water vapor.

General Motors India to double production at Talegaon to meet demand
General Motors India will be doubling production at its Talegaon plant in Maharashta in March 2010. GM India Vice President, Mr P Balendran, told mediapersons that the company had earlier decided to increase output and start a second production shift at Talegaon from June 2010. This will now be done in March itself because of increasing demand. GM India manufactures its small cars
- Chevrolet Beat and Chevrolet Spark - at the Talegaon plant. Its remaining models are produced at its Halol facility in Gujarat.

Mahindra & Mahindra to expand its network of car service outlets
Leading utility-vehicle manufacturer, Mahindra & Mahindra, is all set to expand its multi-brand car service business. At present, the company has 7 multi-brand service outlets in India. It plans to increase this number to 450 in the next 3-4 years. The automobile service business in India is dominated by unorganized service centres, in spite of huge demand and growth potential in the segment. The major organized players in the business are Bosch, Castrol and Jagdish Khattar's Carnation Auto.

Ford to launch new small car under Mercury brand in 2011
Auto company Ford Motor will be launching a new small car in the US under its Mercury brand in 2011. Ford's President in the Americas, Mark Fields, said that the company was responding to the current trend towards fuel-efficient cars with its new small-car lineup. The new Mercury car will be one the ten vehicles that Ford is planning to launch globally in the small-car segment. It will be based on the company's latest global compact car platform.

Nissan may look for new partner in Japan; hopes to come out of debt by 2010-end
Japanese car company Nissan may have to look for a new partner for its small-car requirements, as its future with current partner Suzuki Motor looks uncertain. Ever since European auto major Volkswagen bought a stake in Suzuki Motor, there has been speculation that the Suzuki-Nissan partnership may end. Currently, Suzuki supplies the Pixo model to Nissan, which competes with the Fiat Panda and the Volkswagen Lupo in Europe. Meanwhile, Nissan returned to profit in the last quarter, and is hoping to come out of debt by the end of 2010.
