Mahindra & Mahindra opens new manufacturing plant in Chakan
Mahindra & Mahindra opened its new manufacturing facility in Chakan, near Pune, last week. The plant, which will see an initial investment of Rs 5,000 crore, was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Ashok Chavan. It covers an area of 700 acres, and will have an annual production capacity of 300,000 units, including 50,000 trucks. Mr Anand Mahindra, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Mahindra Group, said that 'Mahindra Chakan' would be one of the most eco-friendly auto plants in the world.

Bentley introduces Rs 2.9 crore Mulsanne in India
British luxury car maker, Bentley, launched the grand tourer Mulsanne in India last week. Priced at Rs 2.90 crore, the handcrafted car will come with a 6.7-litre V8 twin-turbo charged petrol engine, and will be customised according to the owner's requirements. It was unveiled at the British High Commissioner Richard Stagg's residence in Delhi.
Deliveries of the car will start in October this year. Bentley Motors currently sells 25-50 units in India every year, which is approximately 2 percent of its total sales.

Bosch re-opens Naganathapura plant
Auto component maker Bosch re-opened its Naganathapura facility last week after the company management and the trade union reached an agreement. Bosch India Corporate Communications Head, Sanjay Chakravarty, told mediapersons that the concerned parties had come to an understanding at a tripartite meeting between the additional labour commissioner, the Bosch management and the Naganathapura workers' union. Regarding the company's earlier decision to declare a lockout at its other plant in Adugodi, he said there would be no lockout if the union did not go on strike.

JLR to resort to aggressive cost cutting measures to increase profits
Tata Motors - owned British marquee brands -
Jaguar and Land Rover - will be cutting production costs by a substantial percentage over the next 12 months, by sourcing over 30 percent of their vehicle components from low-cost countries including India and China. A team of JLR officials will be meeting long-time Tata Motors suppliers in the coming months to discuss component sourcing.
Other cost cutting measures taken by the company include pension restructuring,
an altered pay package for new recruits, a plant closure and greater emphasis on IT infrastructure.

Maruti to reach 10-lakh sales mark in FY 2009-10
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) will soon become the first Indian carmaker to cross the 10-lakh sales mark. The company has so far produced 9.31 lakh units and sold 9.23 lakh units in FY 2009-10. MSIL Chairman, Mr R C Bhargava, told mediapersons that the company was confident of crossing the 1-million mark in the second half of this month. Mr Osamu Suzuki, who heads Suzuki Motor, will be flying down to India for a special ceremony to mark the event later this month.

GM will not capitalize on Toyota recalls, says Lutz
General Motors Vice Chairman, Robert A. Lutz, who will retire from the company this spring, said last week that GM would not capitalize on its Japanese competitor Toyota's recalls. He said that it was unlikely for
Toyota customers to switch directly to Ford or Chevrolet, and that there was little transference between domestic buyers and import buyers in the US. Notwithstanding Lutz's statements, however, GM does figure among those auto companies that are offering heavy discounts to Toyota customers ready to switch brands.
