Hyundai to launch new 800cc car in 2011

Hyundai Motor is developing a new 800cc car to be launched in the second half of 2011. With an expected price of approximately Rs 2 lakh, it will be among the least expensive cars in the country along with the Tata Nano, the Maruti Alto and the Maruti 800, which will soon be discontinued. The Santro, which is Hyundai's cheapest offering at present, was overtaken by the i10 in sales volumes last year. The company is conducting research for the new car in Korea.

Maruti touches 1-million sales mark; to invest Rs 4,185 cr on expansion, research

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) this week rolled out its one-millionth car in FY 2009-10, becoming the first auto company in India to reach the 1-million-sales milestone. Mr Osamu Suzuki, Chairman of the Suzuki Motor Corporation, flew down from Japan specially to attend the event. He said that MSIL was investing close to Rs 1,700 crore on capacity expansion at its Manesar plant, and another Rs 2,521 crore on engine manufacturing and R&D activity.

BMW appoints Andreas Schaaf as new India head

German luxury car company, BMW, has named Mr Andreas Schaaf as the new head of its Indian operations. Mr Schaaf, who headed the company's Russian arm till now, will replace Peter Kronschnabl in India. BMW India made great strides under Mr Kronschnabl, who succeeded in making it the number-one luxury car company in India in 2009, beating long-time market leader Mercedes-Benz. He will now take over as President of BMW Russia.

Honda plans new small car for India, South East Asia to drive sales

Japanese car company Honda looks at its South Korean competitor, Hyundai, as a formidable player in the small-car segment. Mr Fumihiko Ike, the head of Honda's Asia & Oceania operations, said this week that the company's new compact car, to be positioned below the Jazz, would be developed based on the high-quality, low-cost benchmark set by Hyundai. The car will be launched in India in 2011, and is expected to be priced under Rs 5 lakh.

Royal Enfield launches Electra Twinspark 350

Motorbike company Royal Enfield this week launched a new version of the Bullet - the 'Electra Twinspark 350'. The bike is priced at Rs 89,846 for the kickstart variant and Rs 93,846 for the electric-start variant. Royal Enfield Motorcycles Chief Executive Officer R L Ravichandran said that the new bike was "guaranteed to kindle wanderlust" in the company's customers, and would help encourage riding as a lifestyle.

Auto companies to hike prices by 1-3 percent from April 1, 2010

Auto companies in the country will be increasing car prices by 1-3 percent from April 1, 2010. Reasons cited for the hike include the re-engineering of cars to comply with new emission norms and increasing raw material costs. The quantum of increase will range from Rs 2,000 on a compact car to Rs 70,000 on a luxury sedan. Hyundai, Toyota and General Motors have already announced the percentage of the hike. Maruti too has confirmed that it will increase prices, but has not yet provided details.
