HMSI to set up two-wheeler manufacturing facility in Rajasthan

Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India (HMSI) has decided to set up a new manufacturing facility in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. The plant will be built at an initial investment of Rs 500 crore, and will have an annual production capacity of 6 lakh units in its first phase. This will later be scaled up to 12 lakh units, at an additional investment of Rs 600 crore. Meanwhile, the company has launched a new version of its 150cc bike, the Unicorn, at a price of Rs 62,900 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Bajaj Auto reports fourfold increase in Q4 net profit

Two-wheeler company, Bajaj Auto, has reported a fourfold increase in its net profit in last quarter of financial year 2009-10. The company's net profit rose from Rs 130.21 crore in the January-March quarter of 2009, to Rs 528.65 crore in the quarter ended March 31, 2010. The company's better-than-expected performance can be attributed to the strong demand for its competitively priced Discover DTS-Si and Pulsar 135, and the tax benefits accruing from production at its tax-free plant in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand.

JLR sales increase by 12 percent in April 2010

Tata Motors-owned British marquee brands, Jaguar and Land Rover, posted a 12 percent increase in sales in April 2010, on the back of new model launches and the overall increase in auto sales around the world. A JLR spokesperson said that demand for the company's luxury vehicles came mainly from the US, UK and also China, where sales doubled compared to the year-ago period. The British company had reported a profit of Rs 416 crore in the year ended March 31, 2010.

Vehicles account for 70 percent of carbon monoxide emissions in cities: CPCB

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) says in a recent report that vehicular pollution accounts for 70 percent of carbon monoxide, 50 percent of hydrocarbons and 30 percent of suspended particulate matter of the total pollution load in India's major cities. The report also says that 60 percent of vehicular air pollution is caused by vehicles older than ten years. Out of the four metros, Delhi has the highest level of air pollution, followed by Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.

Nissan on recovery track, returns to profit in FY 2009-10

Japanese auto company, Nissan Motor, has reported a profit of 42.4 billion yen in the financial year ended March 31, 2010, compared to a loss of 233.7 billion yen in the previous year. The company's net loss in the January-March quarter of FY 2009-10 stood at 11.6 billion yen, down from 276.9 billion yen in the corresponding period in 2008-09. Nissan President and CEO, Mr Carlos Ghosn, said that though the company was still in crisis mode, it was "well on track toward complete recovery".
