Nissan India unveils compact car Micra; deliveries to start in July 2010
Japanese auto company, Nissan, unveiled its compact car, Micra, in India this week. So far, the company has received 400 bookings for the car, which is being produced at its Chennai facility. Deliveries will begin in July 2010. Nissan Motor India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Kiminobu Tokuyama, told mediapersons that the company would produce 80,000 units of the Micra in FY 2010-11, both for domestic sales and exports. He also announced that the company had roped in actor Ranbir Kapoor as its brand ambassador.

Hyundai India employees call off strike at Sriperumbudur plant
Workers at Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) called off a three-day strike in Sriperumbudur, after reaching an agreement with the company management, following the state government's intervention. The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), as per which the company has agreed to reinstate 35 employees on a case-by-case basis. Another 32 employees will have to take the legal route. Hyundai had earlier dismissed 87 employees on the grounds of 'gross misconduct'.

Honda Siel launches new version of Civic
Honda Siel Cars India
(HSCI) this week launched a new version of its premium sedan, the Honda Civic. The car comes in three variants, priced between Rs 12.20 lakh and Rs 13.81 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), and is powered by a 1.8 litre i-VTEC engine. HSCI Director (Marketing), Mr Tatsuya Natsume, said that the Civic had received high appreciation since its launch in India because of its driving pleasure and contemporary styling, and that its new version had several additional features making it even more desirable.

Michelin may consider setting up new plant to manufacture passenger car tyres
Tyre manufacturer Michelin is considering setting up a second plant in India to produce passenger car tyres. The French company is currently working on its upcoming plant in Tamil Nadu, which will produce only commercial vehicle tyres. A Michelin spokesperson said that the company's focus, at present, is on the truck and bus market in India, and that it would continue to import tyres for passenger vehicles for some time.

GM India to launch diesel variant of Chevrolet Beat in 2011
General Motors India
(GM India) plans to start producing a 1-litre diesel engine for the Chevrolet Beat at its Talegaon facility in Maharashtra. GM India Vice President (Sales, Marketing and Services), Mr Ankush Arora, told mediapersons that company would roll out a diesel engine for the Beat at the beginning of 2011. The existing variants of the car are powered a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which will also be manufactured at the Talegaon plant by the end of 2010.

Commercial vehicle sales may cross 600,000 units in 2010-11
The Commercial Vehicle (CV) segment in India is expected to grow at 15-25 percent in FY 2010-11, according to industry analysts. In 2009-10, total CV sales grew by 38.3 percent to 531,395 units, while Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicle (M&HCV) sales grew by 33.5 percent. Total CV sales are likely to touch 664,000 units this year, if the segment grows at the expected 25 percent. Analysts say that the increasing pace of infrastructure development and a normal monsoon this year will ensure that growth remains high.

Auto industry maintains high sales growth in May 2010 inspite of increased prices
The Indian auto industry continued to grow at a rapid pace in May 2010, inspite of repeated price hikes following the announcement of Budget 2010. Maruti Suzuki
did particularly well, posting its highest ever domestic sales in the month at 90,041 units - 27 percent higher than its sales in May 2009. The company's total sales in May 2010 stood at 102,175 units. Tata Motors' domestic sales went up from 15,388 units in May 2009 to 21,326 units in May 2010. M&M and GM India too grew by 50.1 percent and 61 percent respectively.
