Volkswagen India showcases new entry-level sedan, Vento

Volkswagen India unveiled its new entry-level sedan, the Volkswagen Vento, this week. The Vento is the German automaker's first car to be designed and manufactured in India, and has been built on the VW Polo's platform. The company will disclose the car's expected price in August 2010, and will launch it in the Indian market by the end of this year. The Vento will be produced at Volkswagen's Chakan plant near Pune, and will come in both petrol and diesel variants.

Bajaj, Renault-Nissan to produce small car under OEM partnership

Bajaj Auto and Renault-Nissan will be producing their much-talked-about low-cost car under an OEM arrangement and not a joint venture as was earlier believed. Following Bajaj Auto's recent clarification that the companies did not intend to form a new corporate entity, a Renault-Nissan official confirmed that the partnership was always meant to be based on an OEM exchange. Bajaj Auto will develop and manufacture the car, while Renault will be responsible for its branding and marketing.

Tata Motors to invest Rs 10,000 crore on product development, modernisation

Tata Motors is planning to invest Rs 10,000 crore on product development, capital expenditure and other growth opportunities, over the next 2-3 years. The company is currently riding high on its booming sales, and has decided to expand its product range in both domestic and global markets. It said that the given amount would be raised partly through the issue of securities and partly through its internal resources. In June 2010, the company overtook Korean competitor Hyundai Motor as the second biggest carmaker in India.

Toyota to set up new engine-manufacturing unit in Bidadi

Toyota Motor is planning to set up a new auto-component plant on the outskirts of Bangalore, to manufacture engines for its upcoming small car, the Toyota Etios. Expected to be operational by 2012, the plant will be used to produce engines and transmissions, and will be built at an initial investment of Rs 500 crore. Mr KG Mohan, Senior Vice President (manufacturing and quality) at Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts Ltd, said that the plant would have an annual production capacity of 100,000 engines, and 240,000 transmissions.

Nissan to produce wider range of hybrid vehicles

Japanese auto company, Nissan Motor, is planning to expand its range of hybrid vehicles. While the company will introduce its much-awaited electric car, the Leaf, later this year, it will also launch a gas-electric version of the Fuga in Japan by December 2010, and in the US by 2011. The hybrid Fuga will be marketed in the US as the Infiniti M35. At present, the only hybrid vehicle sold by Nissan is the Altima, which is powered by Toyota's hybrid technology.
