The Audi A4 is a compact luxury sedan that has been in production since 1994 and it is based on the Volkswagen B Platform. The A4 was only launched in India in 2008. The A4 mainly competes with the Mercedes C Class and the BMW 3 Series. The Audi A4 is now in its fourth generation and it comes in both petrol and diesel engine variants.
Design & Styling
The A4 is not the best looking entry-level luxury sedan in the market today but it does have strong character and good on-road presence. The new three-dimensionally carved out bonnet is rounded off by the Audi Singleframe in stone grey. Side air inlets and redesigned angular front fog lights fit in harmoniously with the overall image. The clear body line defines the classic Saloon silhouette which gives a balanced and elegant appearance. The continuous shoulder-line and long bonnet visually stretch the car optically, whilst also giving a dynamic feel to the design. These characteristics give it a traditional Audi design while still maintaining a contemporary look.

Interiors
The interiors of the A4 are luxurious but simple and practical. They don’t go overboard in terms of design and the ergonomics are spot on, making it a very enjoyable car to sit in and drive. There is lots of room for all occupants and the seats are also quite comfortable. The centre console and dashboard are setup very nicely and the craftsmanship is very good giving a sense of high quality throughout the cabin.
Engine & Transmission
The A4 comes with a very well refined 1.8 TFSI petrol engine that is a 4-cylinder unit producing 168bhp and 320Nm of torque, and this provides excellent performance. There is also a 2.0 litre TFSI with more power, and a 2.0 TDI diesel unit with 4-cylinders as well as a 3.0 litre TDI with 6-cylinders and with powerful figures. All the engine specs are brilliant and the units are very well built for top performance. All the engines are also mated a fantastically responsive 8-speed gearbox.
Performance and Handling
The A4 is a great car to drive. We had with us the 1.8 litre TFSI petrol unit that provided great power. All the 168 horses work effortlessly to pull you forward as soon you press down the throttle. The gear changes are incredibly smooth and on time and the paddle shifts are good if you want to drive in manual mode. The ride quality is simply fantastic. The suspension is setup perfectly for highway cruising as well as for the city streets, but we did find the steering to be just a little to light and not direct. Feedback from the car’s chassis is good and you feel properly in control when driving. Overall the car handles quite well and performs really well.
Fuel Efficiency
The A4 comes with a Start-Stop system and a efficiency drive select mode that helps to reduce CO2 emissions and keep your mileage up, but we still got a fuel economy of just 11kmpl on average.
Features
The A4 comes stocked with great features such as automatic climate control, power steering with mounted steering controls, an inbuilt audio system with a centre console screen and 10 speakers, plus Bluetooth. There is also cruise control, auto wipers, electric parking brake and keyless entry.
Safety
Safety features included ESP, airbags and rear parking sensors.
Quality & Reliability
All Audi vehicles are built very well and use the highest quality materials you can find on a car. The fit and finish is very good and the car is built on a solid and strong chassis. Overall the quality is simply fantastic and the car is highly reliable. The only issue you will face is high maintenance costs.
Value for Money
The A4 is a great entry-level luxury car and it comes with some great features. Its value is well worth the money you pay for it.
Verdict
The A4 is a popular car the world over because it is quite simply a very good car. It is not however the most engaging drivers car, but does have good power and provides a great ride. It might look simple but everyone knows just what this car can do.
