The Sail Hatchback is the next generation of the Aveo U-VA. It is built on the same chassis and was launched in India in 2012. The Sail Hatchback is the hatchback version of the Sail and the car comes with both petrol and diesel engines. It competes with other hatches such as the Hyundai i10, Maruti Suzui Swift, Tata Indica, and Honda Brio.
Design & Styling
The Sail Hatchback is a very nice looking hatchback. It is fairly long at almost 4 metres and it has got a sharp front end that comes with a prominent front grille and a nice front bumper with fog lights to give it a sporty look. Then there are some nice alloy wheels under the nicely crafted wheel arches and there are sharp lines running across the body to add an urban and muscular appeal. The rear section is also very nice with the taillights running along the C Pillar. Overall it is a modern and sporty design that looks nice.

Interiors
The Interiors of the Sail Hatchback are decent. The dashboard is very simple with minimum buttons and switches and the instrument cluster is well lit up and easy to read. The steering wheel however doesn’t look like it belongs in this day and age. There is a good amount of room for all passengers and the car seats are comfortable. Ergonomics are also good thanks to the simplicity of the setup.
Engine & Transmission
The Sail Hatchback comes with the same 1199cc petrol engine found in the Beat but it gives a slightly better output of 85bhp and 113Nm. The engine is decently built and works well. However we drove the 1248cc diesel engine that produces 77bhp and 205Nm. The diesel engine is pretty well refined and is quite capable. Both engines variants are mated to a nicely fitted 5-speed gearbox.
Performance and Handling
The car is not the best performing hatch in its segment and that is because its power figures are not the best and the engine doesn’t really give you power on demand. There is quite a bit of turbo lag in the diesel variant and the car is quite sluggish. The steering is also very light and the handling of the car is not to responsive to driver inputs. The suspension setup is good and great in the city and also very nice on the highway, however at very high speed the car is not too solid on the road. Overall ride quality is just average, but the car is still comfortable in the cabin. The brakes work well and the gearbox is easy to switch as well.
Fuel Efficiency
The Sail Hatchback diesel engine variant gave us a very good fuel economy of 17kmpl.
Features
The features include power steering, power windows, air conditioning and an inbuilt audio system with Bluetooth.
Safety
Safety features include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and keyless entry.
Quality & Reliability
Overall the quality of the Sail Hatchback is very decent. The use of good quality materials is seen on the interiors as well as the exteriors. The diesel engine is very well refined and all other components seem to be decent. The car is very reliable as it is well built. Chevrolet also has great after sales services and spare parts are cheap.
Value for Money
The Sail Hatchback is priced very well and it is a good quality car so you will be getting your money’s worth.
Verdict
The Sail Hatchback is a good looking hatch that is also comfortable on the inside. However, it is not the best performer in its segment. It does come with good safety features also.
