The Datsun brand is making a comeback into the Indian market and their first offering is their newly developed entry level hatchback called the GO. The GO will compete against the Hyundai i10, Maruti Wagon R and Chevrolet beat. The Datsun GO is available with only a 1.2 litre petrol unit.
Design & Styling
The overall design of the GO is modern and very practical. It is well under 4 metres at 3785mm so it is a compact vehicle that will go well on Indian roads. The front end features a nicely designed chrome surround grille that is unique to Datsun, and then it also gets stylish headlights. The rear section has nice shoulders and the taillights are nice and big. The car does have an aerodynamic design and it has a decent on road presence, plus it comes in some pretty unique colours as well.

Interiors
The interiors are very basic but practical at the same time. The instrument cluster is very simple and there is only a speedometer and a few other information displays. There is no in-built audio system but instead there is a mobile docking station so you can place your mobile and plug it in to the system so you can play music directly from your phone. The seats are also very nice and there is lots of room for the front passengers. The rear passengers get plenty of headroom but limited legroom. The quality is not the best, but the car still looks good on the inside.
Engine & Transmission
The GO comes with a 1.2 litre petrol engine producing 68bhp. The engine is a decent unit and is very efficient, and it is mated to a well working 5-speed manual transmission.
Performance and Handling
The Datsun GO is not the best driving car but it is a good performer. The engine doesn’t have great power but it works well and pulls the car forward well. The throttle response is good so the car does perform well in the city. On the highway it’s not bad either and he ride quality is quite nice. The steering is a little soft and not very engaging but it still is comfortable, and the car handles well. The suspension setup is also decent, but the rear end does make noises over bumps, but overall the ride is smooth.
Fuel Efficiency
For a petrol unit, the car is very efficient and provides a fuel economy of 18kmpl.
Features
The GO doesn’t have the best features, but the high-end variant does feature power steering, power windows, mobile docking unit with USB and two speakers, and central locking.
Safety
There are no safety features worth mentioning.
Quality & Reliability
The GO is a practical car and it is very cheap, so it doesn’t use the best components out there. It does however have a decent build quality and is a very reliable car. You might face a few issues with the after sales servicing because of the lack of Datsun service centres, but repairs and parts will be very cheap.
Value for Money
The Datsun Go is priced very competitively and is a very decent car so you are getting your money’s worth.
Verdict
The Datsun GO is a good looking practical city car. It might not have the best features, but it has a very well refined engine with great efficiency. In its segment it is also the most unique looking vehicle, but there are many other options to choose from, so have a good look around.
