The Gurkha is a SUV manufactured by Pune based company Force Motors. The Gurkha was first introduced into the Indian market in 2013. The original Gurkha was made for the Indian army and that is why it is a very capable off-road machine. Ts main competitor is the Mahindra Thar.
Design & Styling
The design of the Gurkha is heavily outdated and it hasn’t changed much since it was produced for the Indian army. In fact, the company themselves state that the design is influenced from the Mercedes G Wagon. The most standout feature is the snorkel intake. The front section features a very tacky plastic bumper that acts as a front grille as well. The Gurkha does have a very practical design that is meant for the sole purpose of off-road use. The car has a box shape and the panels are poor in quality and the finishing touches are not good. The use of plastics throughout the car is also a turn off. However, its classical and purposeful design does appeal to many enthusiasts.

Interiors
The Interiors of the Gurkha are also very poor in terms of quality and use of components. The ergonomics are slightly out of tune, and it is certainly not the most comfortable car. The dashboard layout is very simple and plain and the steering wheel has a very outdated design. The cabin does offer a spacious area for the front seat passengers but the rear seat passengers will be quite uncomfortable.
Engine & Transmission
The Gurkha comes fitted with a Mercedes derived, 2.6 litre turbo charged direct injection diesel engine that develops 80bhp and 230Nm torque, and it is also mated to a Mercedes sourced 5-speed transmission.
Performance and Handling
While the looks may not be appealing, the driving dynamics of the Gurkha off-road is what the car is famous for. Thanks to its 4WD system and the differential locks on the front and rear axle the Gurkha is the perfect off-road vehicle. The engine might not have lots of power, but there is enough torque to push through rough terrains. The suspension is brilliant and allows the Gurkha to easily move over steep inclines, slush, mud, boulders, and even big ditches. The wheels are also good for this kind of driving. The power steering also helps tremendously when on very tough terrain. While the car is fun to take off-road, when on-road it is the complete opposite. It is not the car you would like to drive everyday in the city. The steering is tough and there is no power, and on top of that it’s not comfortable. The suspension is also too soft for tarmac. On the highway also you can expect a maximum speed of 130kmph. This car has been made solely for the off-road enthusiast.
Fuel Efficiency
You can expect to get a fuel efficiency of 14kmpl on average.
Features
There are no new age features in the Gurkha except for power steering and air-conditioning.
Safety
There are no new age safety features.
Quality & Reliability
The overall quality of the car is not very good but it is built tough and can withstand almost anything. The car is highly reliable.
Value for Money
The Gurkha offers good value for money if you plan to use it as a recreation vehicle, otherwise doesn’t offer much value if you plan to use it every day.
Verdict
The Gurkha is the perfect Indian off-road vehicle. It can take on nay terrain with ease and it is enjoyable to take on mountain trips, and for the price you can’t go wrong. But do not plan to buy this car as an everyday vehicle.
