The Honda Mobilio is the Japanese car maker’s answer to the growing MPV segment in India. The Toyota Innova has played the winner, and Maruti Suzuki has the very capable Ertigo, but now Honda is offering the Mobilio, which seems to be a great car. The Mobilio is an entirely new platform for Honda and it is available with one petrol engine and one diesel engine. The car also comes in an RS variant that is quite sporty.
Design & Styling
The Mobilio is a nicely styled MPV. It has got a long body at 4.4 metres, but it doesn’t look very tall at just 1.6 metres, and this gives it an aerodynamic look, together with the sharp flowing lines. Its got very nice headlamps, and fog lamps, and then the front grille is typical Honda with the long slab of chrome with the logo in the middle. The rear is also very nice with nicely designed tail lamps. The B and C pillars are black instead of the colour of the car and this gives it a good look. The wheels are also 10 spoke alloys that make it look premium. It’s a decent looking car, but it is the best in its segment in terms of looks.
The RS version of the Mobilio comes with more chrome, including a sportier chrome grille, LED headlights, sportier alloy wheel design and a tailgate spoiler.

Interiors
The interiors are very spacious and there is lots of room in the car with three rows of seating that can be adjusted in anyway you choose. The overall ergonomics are also good and the dashboard is very nice with black plastics and a wooden finish. The instrument cluster is also very nice and the steering wheel layout is also good. Overall quality of the interiors is very good and the finishing touches are nice.
Engine & Transmission
The petrol engine in the Mobilio has been borrowed over from the city. The 1.5 litre i-VTEC engine is very good and very efficient as well. It gives out 117bhp and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The diesel engine is a 1.5 litre i-DTEC with 98bhp and 200Nm of torque, and is also mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Both engines have been tried and tested and are quite brilliant.
Performance and Handling
The Mobilio is a very nice car to drive. The first thing about it is that it is hassle free to drive, and even though it looks large it is actually easy to maneuver. The only problem we encountered is that the steering was a little light, and more engaging drivers might not like that. Both the engine variants perform very well, and you get great acceleration from the diesel variant thanks to the higher torque. But overall the petrol engine is a better performer because you get low end power as well, and you don’t need to shift through the gears very much. Even on the highway the petrol engine is very good. The ride quality is phenomenal for Indian roads and very smooth. The brakes are also spot on, and the tyres have good grip. The car drives well in the city and is also great for long trips.
Fuel Efficiency
Fuel efficiency was also very good with both variants giving a good mileage. The petrol variant gives you around 15kmpl, while the diesel variant gives you 20kmpl.
Features
The Honda Mobilio gets a lot of good features, air-conditioning, power steering, power windows, central locking, keyless entry, 15.7 touch screen audio system, with USB, and Navigation, Bluetooth and AUX. It also has steering mounted controls.
Safety
Safety features include, ABS with EBD, and front SRS airbags.
Quality & Reliability
The Mobilio has been engineered quite well, and starting with the exterior body going all the way to the engine and transmission, the overall quality is very good. Honda does not compromise on quality, and the Mobilio is a proper Honda. The attention to details with the design and the use of good components in the ineterios, with the Japanese engineering make this car a high quality product. IT is also very reliable because it wears a Honda badge. After sales and servicing will also be reasonable.
Value for Money
The Mobilio is priced very competitively and offers great value for money considering that it is an MPV with a Honda engine and great quality.
Verdict
The Mobilio is a fantastic family car aimed at young families. It’s got great space, comfort, fantastic driving abilities and an efficient engine. It’s great for the city, great for road trips, and it looks nice on the road as well. While it might not have the dirivng dynamics of the Innova, it is more fresh and cheaper as well.
