The i10 is probably the best sub-compact hatch in the country. Since it was introduced in 2008 it has made a mark in the car world. The latest generation i10 was revealed in 2011 and it comes with some new age features which make it stand out from the rest of the hatches available within its segment. The i10 comes with a variety of engine and transmission options including an automatic variant that works wonderful. The engines are very well engineered and give great fuel economy. Its closest competitors are the Ford Figo, Maruti Ritz, Chevy Beat, Nissan Micra and Tata Indica Vista. Although it stands in a tough market the i10 simply amazes us with its overall package.
Design & Styling
The i10 is very compact and again uses Hyundai’s new fluidic design where there are plenty of curves wrapped around a very modern looking hatch. It is very short in length and the front section looks nice with its wrap around headlights and front grille. The rear also has nice combination lamps and the car has a nice on-road presence. All the materials used are strong and of good quality and the finishing touches are very nice. It also comes with decent sized wheels.

Interiors
The interiors of the i10 are very practical and appealing. The ergonomics are fantastic and there is a nicely designed dashboard and instrument cluster. There is also very good head room for all passengers, and while the front has plenty of room, the rear could have used some more leg room, but it is still ample. The quality of the interiors is also very good and the design layout is very attractive and modern.
Engine & Transmission
There are many engine variants available. The base version is the 1.1 litre 4-cylinder petrol that can give 69bhp, which is fantastic for a car of this size. This engine is also mated to a wonderful 5-speed manual box. It is one of the better engineered small engines in its segment. The 1.2 litre is quite spectacular and can give out 80bhp which is just thrilling and amazing. This engine comes with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox, and both work very well.
Performance and Handling
It is hard to imagine that Hyundai have given us such a wonderful car. Both engine variants are wonderful, but the 1.2 litre just gives you a very fun and enjoyable ride. The suspension setup on the car is simply brilliant and the tyres also work wonders in the ride quality. It performs like most sedans would in the segment above it. The acceleration is very good and even the automatic transmission is very convenient and works really well. it is perfect for city driving as well as highway journeys. At high speeds the i10 is really stable and comfortable with very little movement felt inside the cabin. The car is perfectly engineered and it performs well, handles like a gem, and the brakes are also very good. There is very little body roll and the overall ride quality is just amazing for a hatch.
Fuel Efficiency
The 1.1 litre engine gives a good fuel economy of 17kmpl, but the 1.2 litre automatic transmission can give you around 13kmpl. Still if you have the manual 1.2 litre unit you could manage to get 15/16kmpl, which is quite good. There is also a LPG version available on only one variant if you need an even better fuel economy.
Features
The i10 comes loaded with great features for a hatch in this segment. You get power steering with mounted controls, air conditioning, power windows, rear defogger, keyless entry, an in-built audio system with USB and AUX, and there is also the option of an electric sunroof on the highest variant.
Safety
Safety features are also new age and you get dual airbags, central locking, fog lamps, ABS and a reverse parking sensor only on the highest variant.
Quality & Reliability
The i10 is probably the best built mid-level hatch in the country. The materials are all of good quality and the finishing is great on the inside and the outside. It is also a very well engineered car and it is very reliable and can survive rough roads and conditions. The engine is extremely well refined, there is no dashboard vibrations, and no falling parts in the inside. Hyundai has got a fantastic dealer and service network and you really get good service from them, and better yet the components for the car are inexpensive.
Value for Money
There is nothing you can loose from purchasing the i10, in fat you are gaining a lot, so it is safe to say that the value of the car exceeds what you are paying for it. It is priced very well for such a great product.
Verdict
The only negative side of this car is the rear seat space, but there is lots of headroom and the interior quality is also good. The i10 performs extremely well, and if you want an auto gear box, this is the best one in all the hatches in India. Great quality and great enjoyment, plus comfort, the i10 is the best hatch in its segment without a doubt.

I simply love its design. Its look are very impressive. I seen all the car around 5 lacs but the latest engine, interiors and exteriors, fuel economy wins my heart in i10 kappa. I think i10 is the best petrol car in this range.
The year was 1967. Hyundai, a 20 year old construction company had decided to establish an automobile assembly plant in Seoul, for assembling the ‘Cortina’ model of Ford, going against the claims of the Korean Industry Ministry that importing a car would be cheaper than assembling it. But Hyundai’s Chung Ju-Yung had different plans. Hence ‘Hyundai Motor Company’ was born, just as a unit for assembling Ford cars. But just in a span of seven years, Hyundai stunned the critics and the first Korean manufactured car, the Pony, rolled out of the Hyundai stable.
Three decades later, Hyundai has established itself as the most aggressive automobile manufacturer the world has seen, capturing every market by with its diverse product portfolio and aggressive marketing tactics. From nowhere, Hyundai has emerged as a serious competitor to almost all automakers around the globe, and with an unparalleled growth rate, went on to become the world’s fifth largest automobile manufacturer.
