Company History

Jaguar was born in 1922 when William Lyons along with William Walmsley launched the Swallow Sidecar Company. This company was building bodies for companies like Austin and Fiat. In 1931, the company joined hands with the Standard Motor Company to build the “Standard Swallow.” In 1935, the SS Jaguar was built.

Jaguar produced some amazing cars like the XK 120, the XK 140 and the XK 150.  Jaguars slogan for the years was “Grace, Space, Pace.” Three piston configurations were offered: Domed, Flat and Dished. During World War II, Jaguar made aircraft engines. It was also known for producing sports cars.

In 1951, Jaguar leased Browns Lane from the Daimler Motor Company Limited. In 1955 the company invested 1 million pounds on building the Jaguar 2.4 small car.

Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation to form British Motor Holdings in 1966. The company after merging with Leyland became the British Leyland Motor Corporation in 1968.

In 1984, Jaguar was listed on the London Stock Exchange and became a part of the FTSE 100 Index until Ford acquired it in 1989.  In 1999, it became part of Ford’s new Premier Automotive Group along with Aston Martin, Volvo Cars and Land Rover.

In 2008, Tata bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford. The deal had rights to three other brands – Daimler, Lanchester and Rover.

Company Founder(s)

William Lyons was born on September 4 1901 to William Lyons who was the owner of a musical instrument shop and he had a wife, Minnie who was the daughter of a mill owner. Lyons attended the Arnold School and thereafter got an apprenticeship at Crossley Motors in Manchester where he studied at the technical school. In 1919, he left his job to work as a salesman. Two years later, William Walmsley moved close to him and made side cars. Lyons bought one car. Lyons and Walmsley at Lyons’ 21st legal birthday setup the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922. By 1927, however he moved to cars. In 1928, Lyons moved the company to Coventry and changed the name of the company to SS Cars Ltd. In 1931, the group sold the first SS1. In 1935, Jaguar was born.

Lyons styled each new model that was introduced. Lyons also merged Jaguar with the British Motor Corporation to form British Motor Holdings.
