This is the largest luxury sedan in the Mercedes-Benz fleet and it is considered the pinnacle in luxury, sometimes also called the world’s best car. The origin of this car can be traced back to the 1950s and it has been the flagship model for Mercedes for over 50 years and over that time it has debuted some of the company’s most innovative technologies. There are multiple engine options available for the S Class in India and the car competes with the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 and the Jaguar XJ.
Design & Styling
The S Class is a full size luxury sedan that looks elegant and brilliant. Unlike the smaller model E Class and C Class, the car features a curvier exterior such as that found in the CLS. The new S Class is more than 5 metres in length, so it is a very long car. The front hood is also long and low and there are curves on the side that run towards the large front headlights and even larger chrome front grille. The wheel arches are accentuated giving the car more curves as well and then for style and luxury there are massive alloy rims. Overall it is very attractive design and has a good on road presence.

Interiors
There is so much space in the S Class. The rear legroom is really incredible and the seats are just very well spaced out and very comfortable. The dashboard once again is typical Mercedes and everything is laid out in the same fashion as the other models, but again there re just too many buttons spread throughout the cabin. The finishing touches are very good and there is wood trims and chrome splashed all over making the car seem like a 5-star hotel suite.
Engine & Transmission
We drove the highest end variant and that is the S 500. This variant comes with the massive 5461cc petrol V8 engine that produces 369bhp and 505Nm of torque. The engine is a beauty and it is mated to the same 7-speed auto transmission that is brilliantly linked in the other models as well.
Performance and Handling
The S Class really is a great large vehicle. Even though it is a massive car, it still runs very well on the roads and even in the city. However, yet again because of its size it doesn’t handle the best, but it does give great acceleration and you can really feel the power on the highway. It also takes to Indian roads quite well and the suspension setup is very decent, but not as smooth as the E Class. The long wheelbase probably has something to do with it. The steering is quite heavy and not the most responsive, but it’s still easy to drive and doesn’t make a mess of things when on smaller crowded roads. The brakes are really good and the inside cabin is extremely comfortable.
Fuel Efficiency
You will probably get around 9kmpl on average.
Features
As standard equipment you get power steering and steering mounted controls, power windows, electrically adjustable seats and full automatic climate control, cruise control, multi function display, in-built audio system with very nice speakers and a central infotainment controller and now they also come with start/stop button, and that is exactly what the S Class features. It also comes with a panoramic sunroof and Nappa leather seats. There is also a rear seat entertainment package that includes LCD screens for the rear passengers.
Safety
Once again all Mercedes cars come with standard safety features such as Electronic Stability Control, Acceleration Skid Control, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, adaptive brake lights, multiple airbags, and remote central locking. Then there is a PARKTRONIC system with reverse camera, ATTENTION Assist and Agility Control.
Quality & Reliability
This is the ultimate luxury machine, so quality is the best out there. It is also very well built and engineered to perfection, so it is highly reliable. Components can sometimes be a problem and servicing is expensive, especially in the monsoon seasons, electrical failures can happen.
Value for Money
It is definitely worth the money you spend, if you don’t mind the high import duty on it.
Verdict
This is an ultimate luxury vehicle, although it doesn’t look as good as the Jaguar, it still is very appealing. If you have the money to buy one, you might want to check out the interiors of the Audi A8 and then decide.
