The Rexton is a full-size SUV made by Korean manufacturer Ssangyong, which is owned by Mahindra. The Rexton was launched in India in 2012 and it competes with the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortunner and the Honda CR-V. The car is only available in diesel engine.
Design & Styling
The Rexton features a very bold design that is inspired from Mercedes’ family of SUVs the front end looks very similar to the GL Class. It gets a classy chrome grille and projector headlights along with it. The front bumper is also quite nice with the integrated fog lamps. There are nice alloy wheels and the wheel arches add some muscle to the design. The Rexton has a great on-road presence because of its size and it looks dominating on the road.

Interiors
The interiors of the Rexton are very impressive in terms of space and comfort. All occupants get ample room and there are also plenty of storage compartments and a huge boot for luggage. There is however a lack of good quality components. The dashboard looks good but the use of materials is not the best and the ergonomics are decent.
Engine & Transmission
The Rexton comes with a Mercedes sourced 2696cc 5-cylinder diesel engine. The engine comes in two power outputs. The 2WD variant gets 162bhp and 340Nm of torque. The AWD variant gets 184bhp and 402Nm of torque. Both variants are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
Performance and Handling
The Rexton comes fitted with a Mercedes sourced engine and therefore the performance is quite good. The AWD drive variant has lots of torque and the acceleration is very good. there is a little turbo lag, but it’s not much that affects the throttle response. The car picks up speed very well. The car also uses the Mercedes-Benz Chassis which is built quote nicely offering great support and driving dynamics. The car is stable on the highway and drives very well. The suspension setup is also very good for the highway and city use. And with AWD the car also goes off-road and handles very well on rough terrain. The ride quality is very good even on dirt roads. The car does have very light steering that isn’t very direct but it does provide good feedback to the driver. Overall the car drives and performs well.
Fuel Efficiency
The Rexton provides a fuel economy of around 13kmpl on average.
Features
The Rexton comes with some very good features for its segment, which includes speed sensitive power steering, power windows, auto climate control, touchscreen infotainment system, steering mounted controls, navigation system, keyless entry, rain sensing wipers, and cruise control.
Safety
The Rexton also comes with good safety features such as ABD with Stability control, Hill decent control, reverse parking sensors, and dual front airbags and side airbags.
Quality & Reliability
The Ssangyong Rexton is built on a Mercedes-Benz chassis and it also features a Mercedes sourced engine and transmission so the overall quality and refinement is quite good. There are some places where quality is not on par with other SUVs in the segment such as the interiors, but nonetheless the Rexton is built to be tough reliable. Sourcing parts might be an issue and spares can be costly, but with Mahindra backing the company there shouldn’t be much after sales problems.
Value for Money
The Rexton has good value for money as it is priced cheaper than other cars in the segment and has fantastic features.
Verdict
The Rexton looks good and has a great drivetrain thanks to Mercedes. It is a good performer but the overall quality is not on par with the other cars in its segment. It is priced better and does come with better features and it is also a good off-road vehicle.
