The Sumo Gold is a facelifted version of the orginal Tata Sumo MUV launched by the Indian car maker in 1994. The Sumo gold comes with only one diesel engine variant and it competes with the Mahindra Bolero.
Design & Styling
The Tata Sumo Gold looks like a bloated vehicle as it features a boxy shape with no real curves and a straight flat front hood. The front grille is nothing but dull and the components are completely outdated. Even the bumpers look bad in quality. The Sumo Gold lacks any kind of modern design interpretation and looks much like it did back in the 90s. This is one MUV that doesn’t look appealing at all, except for the fact that it is huge.

Interiors
The interiors are also very poor in terms of quality and design. The components are very poor and the dashboard lacks any kind of appealing design, and the ergonomics are not very good. There is however plety of space in the interior, which is the only positive about the cabin.
Engine & Transmission
The Sumo Gold comes with a 3.0 litre diesel engine with just 85bhp and it gets a fairly decent working 5-speed gearbox. The engine is not very well refined.
Performance and Handling
The overall performance of the Sumo Gold is not very good. The car has been designed without any functional performance oriented features and was built just to be a work horse. The steering si super light and the suspension is soft and there is too much feedback at the steering wheel. The car also vibrates a lot and feels unstable at high speeds on the highway. The car also accelerates very slowly and it is hard to handle because of its weight and size. It is however capable of going anywhere and can take on tough terrains. This is not a driver friendly vehicle.
Fuel Efficiency
You can expect a fuel efficiency of 14kmpl.
Features
There are no special features in the Sum Gold besides power steering and air-conditioning.
Safety
There are no new age safety features.
Quality & Reliability
In the new Sumo Gold the quality has been improved but only by just a little bit. There are still huge concerns. The interiors however look better and so do the use of exterior body panels. The Sumo is still built on a strong chassis and can take quite a beating. Thanks to its decent tyres, you won’t worry about damaging the car when on bumpy roads. Parts for the car are relatively cheap and easily available. Put the car might need servicing regularly.
Value for Money
It gives you good value for your money since the car is priced very low and is very practical.
Verdict
Below par quality of components, but built to be tough. This car is meant for its space and comfort and the fact that it can go almost anywhere. The car is in fact very practical; just don’t buy it for its performance or its looks. If you want an MUV but you are on a tight budget, this is the perfect car for you. Just don’t expect it to be a fun car to drive.
