The Volkswagen Ameo is the German company’s first shot at an entry level compact sedan. The car has been design specifically for emerging markets and India and is also manufactured entirely in the country. It will compete with the Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, and Tata Indica.
Design & Styling
The Ameo is a compact sedan that takes much of its design from the Polo, but then it gets a boot as well. At first glance the car looks nice and it also has certain areas with it excels, for example the front end looks very nice and modern, but then the rear does not look very appealing and it seems like VW tried to squish in a boot, which seems disproportionate. Overall, though it’s not bad and does have some nice elements, but it more or less looks like a Polo.

Interiors
Volkswagen has always been known for its class leading interiors fit and finish and of course, build quality, and the Ameo is no exception. Step inside the cabin and you will get a déjà vu of the Polo. The cabin is solid build and feels far more superior to the competition, but the design is showing its age. A little spruced up job couldn’t have hurt, but one, honestly, can’t complain much.
Engine & Transmission
At the moment, the Ameo is only available in petrol – 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, which is also available in the Polo, and is mated with a five-speed manual transmission. It might have the least ponies in the segment with a modest 74bhp but it is a very nice refined engine.
Performance and Handling
The overall performance of the Ameo seems to be great for the city. For slow moving traffic condition or commuting in the city, it churns out enough juice. Within 2,500-3,000rpm, the engine noise is more or less controlled, but after crossing this mark, the coarse sound reveals its 3-cylinder roots. On the highway, though, it’s a completely different story. This is where the Ameo shows its weakness. It lacks a solid mid-range punch that forces you to downshift more often than not, especially when it comes to overtaking. It certainly isn’t a fun car to drive, but it is comfortable and the ride quality is very nice as is the handling.
Fuel Efficiency
We managed to get a fuel economy of 15kmpl.
Features
The VW comes with some very nice features for this segment, and this includes power steering with mounted controls, power windows, air-conditioning, audio system, cruise control, and rain sensing wipers.
Safety
Safety features include ABS, airbags and a reverse parking camera.
Quality & Reliability
Being a Volkswagen the overall quality is top notch and definitely best in its segment. The car is built well and from what we know about the Polo, the Ameo will also be highly reliable.
Value for Money
The car is definitely worth every penny you spend on it and it is the best value for money in its class.
Verdict
If you want a German car for pocket change and high quality which is good in the city then go for it. But if you want something more exciting and fun to drive then look elsewhere.
