The Volvo S60 is the entry level mid-sized luxury sedan on offer from Swedish car makers Volvo in India. The S60 has been successful in the global market since it began production in 2000, and it was only brought to India in 2011. The S60 is now in its second generation and in India it is offered with two diesel engine options. The S60 competes against the Volkswagen Passat, Toyota Camry, Mercedes C Class and the BMW 3 Series.
Design & Styling
The new Volvo S60 has been redesigned to appeal to younger consumers and therefore it looks sportier than the previous generation. It also has more curves than the other Volvo models and looks more aerodynamic. The car sits low and it fairly long at 4635mm. The Front grille is fairly large and typical Volvo design, and the rear gets a nice taillight design and dual exhausts. Then there are the large alloy rims to give the car a nice overall premium and sporty appeal. Overall the car does look very nice and can give some competition to tis competitors.

Interiors
Volvo is known for its interior comfort and this is evident in the Volvo S60. The interiors are simply fabulous, and very plush and comfortable. The dashboard follows the typical Volvo layout and the ergonomics are spot on. The leather seats are very nice and there is plenty of room throughout the cabin for all the occupants.
Engine & Transmission
The S60 comes with two diesel variants and both are very well refined. The lower variant is the 1984cc 5-cylinder turbodiesel with 160bhp and 400Nm of torque. The higher variant is the 2400cc 5-cylinder turbodiesel unit that pumps out 212bhp and 440Nm of torque. Both engines are equally refined, and both are also mated to a brilliant 6-speed automatic transmission.
Performance and Handling
The lower spec engine has a good amount of torque and provides a good acceleration, but it does feel a little underpowered. The refinement is good and its overall performance is good for the city. However, the high spec engine provides instantaneous power delivery to the front wheels and the higher torque allows the car to race from a standstill to 100kmph in just 7.6 seconds. The 2400cc diesel unit is the preferred engine in terms of overall performance, but both engine variants provide the same ride quality and smooth comfort thanks to the incredible suspension setup. On the highway the car feels really good and the handling is also very good. The transmission is also very good and gear changes are smooth. On the whole the S60 does feel more like a driver-focused car, but it still keeps its comfort elements on a luxurious level. Overall the performance and ride quality is very good.
Fuel Efficiency
The lower spec diesel unit provides a fuel economy of around 13kmpl, while the higher spec engine provides around 12kmpl.
Features
The S60 does come with some very good features such as power steering with mounted controls, power windows, electronic climate control, interior air quality system, panoramic glass roof, rain sensors, cruise control, high performance audios system with a 5-inch screen.
Safety
Volvo is the leader in automotive safety so you can expect the best technology. Some features include Blind Spot Information Display, ABS with traction control, advanced stability control, engine drag control, Active bending lights, dual stage airbags, and parking sensors.
Quality & Reliability
The quality of the car is top notch. The exteriors panels are fitted nicely and made up of premium components, and the interiors exude the most premium and luxurious cabin. The engines are also very well refined and all other components are good quality. There is not much cabin noise in the cabin and the ride quality is superb. The only problem might be that servicing might be expensive, but then again Volvo cars rarely breakdown or need repair. Spare parts will also be expensive, but on the whole the car is very reliable.
Value for Money
The S60 has a good value for money mainly because of its features and safety technology.
Verdict
The S60 is a very good entry-level luxury sedan. It might be priced lower than the 3 Series and the C-Class, but it looks just as appealing and sporty. It does however cost more then its Japanese rivals, but the technology in this car is simply amazing. The higher spec engine is very good and the driving dynamics are good. This car is the whole package with its performance, comfort and technology.
